The Donner Pioneer Monument, a designated California Historic Landmark, was dedicated on June 6, 1918 at Donner Memorial State Park in honor of the pioneer families who crossed the Sierra Divide in search for a better life. The monument was an effort conceived by local community representatives who formed the Donner Monument Committee including a contribution from the California Legislature and finally achieved by the Native Sons of the Golden West in 1918. A study in 2006 suggested the general condition of the pedestal base, pedestal and sculpture are in poor condition.
The Sierra State Parks Foundation (SSPF) has commissioned an updated assessment report of this unique world-class work of art as the first phase of an ambitious project to restore the monument estimated to cost $1.5 million. Partnering with the Native Sons of the Golden West and California State Parks, plans include the restoration of the monument base and bronze sculpture, sustainable landscaping, and the creation of an outdoor group pavilion to host education and community events.
Donation levels over $1,000 will be recognized on the Donor Wall in the Visitor Center foyer. All donation levels include a one year membership to the Sierra State Parks Foundation and "thank you" gifts at various donation levels. We will be pleased to send you our Donner Fundraising Campaign materials or meet with you to share our vision.
We have the approved plans for the construction of an Washoe Village Interpretive Village at DL Bliss State Park. This area, developed in cooperation with the Washoe Tribe of California/Nevada, will provide educational opportunities for park visitors and school groups alike.
Our plan is to hire a full time gardener, during the 2015 summer season, to implelment the Garden Restoration Plan that is currently being developed. These funds will also enable the purchase of tools and supplies.
The Sierra State Parks Foundation maintains over 15 KM of groomed trails through the Olympic Trail System at Sugar Pine Point State Park. Past support has enabled the purchase of a groomer, insurance and personnel support. Please help us to continue this tradition.
During the winter of 2012, a fierce storm severly damaged the historic marine railing system at the South Boathouse. In addtion, damage to the retaining wall and 1903 building has caused closure of the building and the relocation of the vessel, Mercury. We have completed the engineering plans and are now raising funds to support the permitting and construction. GREAT NEWS: We have recieved a $40,000 matching grant for this project. Your money will double its value when you donate today!
These funds will be used to design and fabricate three interpretive panels to be placed on the paths that wind through the park.
These funds will enable State Parks to hire a "Bear Intern" during the 2015 summer season. This postion educates our park visitors on the proper techniques to make sure that our Tahoe bears remain wild through the wise actions of our Tahoe humans. These funds also provide for educational materials.
